more than just an oxymoron!

The return of N[square]

N[sqaure] - or Nebulous Nerd!

Yep, that's right! Making sure that I dont make a hiatus of one whole year -- here I am back! After what has been a mixture of procrastination, heavy workload and studies, I finally found some time out to key in some random thoughts!

The Judicial Crisis, The Lal Masjid Issue (discussed in the last post!) have long gone down the pages of history and the recent events have further overshadowed them. The Lal Masjid issue ended in the most tragic manner when the SSG elites stormed into the mosque resulting in massive bloodshed and damage to the building. How much of govt's claims were true and how many were a bunch of rotten lies remains a mystery since media was kept away from the scene well before the final operation and were kept out several hours after the siege ended at a dramatic - yet sorry - note. Who was right, who was wrong. What were the mistakes and what were the flaws. Where did the government fail and where did the 'militants' turned out to be the irresponsible party. These are issues that remain wide open and can accommodate plenty of debate and argument that won't be going anywhere.

The Judicial Crisis.. well that still goes on! Lawyers continue to boycott PCO Judges hoping that the new govt. would restore the 3rd November situation of Judiciary -- how realistic is that is yet to be seen. The only detainee now is the deposed CJ Iftikhar Choudhry...! Ironically theses are the same judges who had taken oath under PCO a few years back and now refuse to take oath under the same again! Amazing world isn't it!

Been busy since August working on a new magazine. I had it done by October last year but then it went in cold storage and now it's alive and kicking again. The launch is due on 10th Feb 2008. Do see the website at http://theyouth.com.pk

I've been working on the layout, cover, graphics, promotional items, parts of marketing deptt.!! So it's been all hectic and chaotic!

Recap!

Whats cookin'!

Well with the exams underway i hardly have time enough to get online! But here's it yet another blog entry!

A lot has changed since the last blog entry... the city witnessed one of the worst political riots in some years and yet once again we witnessed a lot of mud-splashing by political opponents! While the interior ministry claimed chances of indian and israeli intelligence involved in these acts, opposition kept blaming MQM and PML-Q, PML-Q decided to blame opposition while MQM decided to put the blame on the Chief Justice - yeah, its a wild world alright! And as always we had widespread protests, strikes and vandalism. TV Footage released by MQM targets violent acts, target shooting and vandalism of public property by the opposition parties and PPPP (yep thats 4 P's) showing lo-quality clips of MQM! Media Footages were more neutral and showed both sides blatantly violating all sorts of ethical, moral and civic rules. There were clips of political activists destroying traffic signals and innocent people hiding behind cars, blood gushing out of wounds and quite visible bullet holes! It was more disgusting than horrific. The city remained silent in mourning for the next two days. The consequences on the stock market were disastrous! The newspapers reported losses to the city worth over 1 billion rupees! Much of this could have been averted if MQM had thought more sensibly before planning a rally the same day as the CJ and the government and agencies adopting proper modes of security, rangers and police acting promptly and people being less egoistic. Alas! This has been the dilemma of our society.

What next?

And as if the rift between the CJ and Prez wasnt enough the already precarious issue of Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa took a new shape when some students of the said seminary kidnapped 4 police officials (yea you read that right!). The conditions turned much more dangerous when negotiations failed and we abruptly got the news that ICT entry/exit points were sealed and security beefed up. A sure operation against the radical institute was called off at the eleventh hour and the policemen released the following day. The head of the radical clan has already warned of nationwide suicide attacks if any operation is conducted against them. With women in veils brandishing long sticks and men with alleged automatic weapons this is some wacky institute!!

Blogger comes back to life!

Yep, thats right! After nearly 12 months of censorship in Pakistan, all the .blogspot domains have come back to life. Many of the blogspot users in Pakistan switched to blogger.pk or used the ip-bypassing pkblogs.com which enabled access to all .blogspot domains. After much hue and cry and a major campaign for the 'freedom of speech' (i wonder if that was the case, why didnt the govt block Y! 360 or WL Spaces!), without any notification of any kind Blogspot is now unblocked! This change most definitely came about a few hours back since i checked a blogger blog and it was blocked till yesterday.

But now there's another issue. As Teeth Mastero points out, the Blogger Beta is blocked! So any Pakistani blogger who upgraded to Blogger Beta will be unable to access his blog no matter what - not even with anonymous IP's!! (see TM's blog for the technical specs!)

Cricket Mayhem!

Maybe late, but I definitely won't let the opportunity to discuss the hottest topic around go by! Woolmer's death, Inzi's retirement and resignation of chairman and the selection committee of PCB! Pakistan Cricket is certainly going through the toughest times it has ever faced and it has been the case since the Oval Controversy – it would only be more suited if you call it the curse of Darrell Hair!! The ex-elite umpire must’ve caste some dark magic on the poor folks!

First there are these allegations of ball tampering placed by umpire Darrell Hair who shortly called the match as a forfeit by PakistanEngland! The charges were proved false and grumpy, racist Hair got stripped off his status as an elite panel umpire of ICC. He might have got loads of criticism in the subcontinent but the Australians backed him as if he were a hero. The ICC also maintained almost a neutral stance on the issue eventually commenting quite diplomatically. Hair went away but the miseries of Team Pakistan were to begin from here! As a result of the forfeiture of the match, Inzamam was banned for a few matches resulting in another new issue – who’ll be the captain! Showing their team spirit the whole team and the management fell into chaos just before the start of the Champ’s Trophy! Younus Khan gave his resignation blaming the then chairman Shehryar Khan for mishandling issues. Shehryar had earlier made Mohammad Yousuf the team’s captain. Disgruntled, Shahryar Khan resigned. Naseem Ashraf was made the new chairman who asked Younus Khan to take his resignation back and made him the captain! After three days of frenzy and chaos, the team was ready (or was it?). But as it turned out our team had to bear an early knock-out! in favor of

To add insult to injury and to further create a sense of tension, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif were pulled out of the squad just before the start of the tournament after PCB tested them positive for banned substances!

The misery didn’t end here… Waqar Younus – the bowling coach – and a couple players went for the Hajj. After his arrival, the media received yet another news from the meida hype-station (aka Team Pakistan)! Waqar Younus was sacked and for no reason at all! Geo TV – which never lets any opportunity to make a fuss of every small issue – actually arranged a series of programs that lasted for nearly a week discussing the ‘oh-so-controversial’ issue with live calls and guests who had just about anything to do with Pakistan Cricket.

The drama doesn’t end here – meanwhile, Shoaib and Asif get a ban of 2 and 1 year respectively for taking banned substances. ICC and WADA are happy. But PCB doesn’t want that to happen, do they? So they think: ‘Hey, why not call up another trial and clear them – just to add more to the drama!’ The next thing you know is Shoaib and Asif’s appeal being upheld and the two getting a green signal – WADA is furious, ICC shrugs but then asks PCB to reconsider, PCB shrugs back!

The world cup squad looks all rosy now but the team’s performance in South Africa raises question marks. And just when things were getting miserable, Afridi adds more misery by poking his bat at a jeering fan and getting a suspension for himself!

‘Perfectly fit’ Akhtar and Asif are rushed to England for a quick check-up and are declared unfit instantly!! Shortly followed by an unfit Abdur Razzaq! So the team went to the Caribbean with a team that was unbalanced in all ways and featuring an out-of-form Inzi, Kamran Akmal and Younus Khan, recently recalled Imran Nazir and Azhar Mahmood and absolutely no Afridi, Abdur Razzaq, Akhtar or Asif. As predicted, the ‘hot-favorites’ got a really hot licking at the hands of West Indies and associate member Ireland!!! The team had the dignity to defeat Zimbabwe though – thanks to the knock by Nazir with small contributions from Inzi and Afridi (re-appearing after his suspension).

And if matters had not gotten worse enough, the coach gets mysteriously murdered after the defeat of Pakistan by Ireland. Initial reports said his death was caused by the tragic upset defeat but murder was later confirmed. Inzi decided to retire from ODI’s within the next few hours. This was followed later by the resignation of Nasim Ashraf and then his selection committee headed by Wasim Bari.

The team is currently devising a plan to reach home safely and probably that’s why they are coming in parts – five till the recent news. First to come was Mohammad Yousuf. The media personnel waited for him for hours but the smart chap dodged the paparazzi by leaving Jinnah International using the internal departure lounge instead of the international arrivals!! The poor media guys managed to get a glimpse of him driving his car away!

Younus Khan was the next to him. Not as lucky as Mohammad Yousuf, he was completely surrounded by media personnel and an angry crowd – who thankfully didn’t turn to an angry mob that vandalizes everything that’s around them! The tight-lipped vice captain did not give any statement and was quickly rushed to the safety of his car by his two brothers acting as his bodyguards!! The rest of the team is expected to come in three more stages now en route Dubai.

Is this the end of it all? Is this the end of the Darrell Hair curse? Who know! Only time will tell. We still have the case of Shoaib and Asif impending – the WADA guys have threatened to take the case to court!

Team Pakistan Rocks!

In case you are wondering, just concentrate on the title with the utmost anguish, disgust and fury and then you will see the "merry" faces of our beloved cricket (if u wanna call that cricket) team!! C'mon man, for crying out loud - they lost to an associate member!!! And to top it all, ol' Inzi balmes 'luck' for the humiliating defeat! The next morning, all the pyaray pakistanis flood the Geo News text message bar with lovely greetings for the heroic cricket team with one message offering them tomatoes (rotten, of course) upon their arrival in Pakistan. Many believed Team Pakistan will try to restore their sanity after the scenes of pure embarrassment at World Cup 2003 but they repeat the same thing again in 2007 only going one more step ahead by losing to Ireland - yeah thats right, Ireland. And that's not all, this Irish bowler actually bowled to Pakistan with an economy of less than 1 and had his name in one of the best bowling figues in World Cup history!!

Let us face it, Inzi might be of around the same age as Lara or Tendulkar but they both have a form that Inzi can not share even in his dreams! Lara even goes on to say that he'd like to continue his test career to the age of 40's and no one can criticize him because of the excellent form he's in. Younis Khan has been out of form in the ODI's for a long time now, maybe he should quit ODI's too. Mohammad Yousuf remained as the sole savior of the team but that does not mean he's been a master blaster. He's been quite out of form as well since the year started and skeptics have questioned his form over and over again.

The selected team was no less than a joke. I mean come to think of it, there was no Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Asim Kamal, Misbah ul Hasan, Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq or Mohammad Asif!! The opening order collapsed immediately in the first over and what followed was quite expected - something like a domino effect!

Let's just hope (like we did after WC 2003) that sanity is restored to PCB and Team Pakistan; old players offer resignation from ODI's and a fresh, young and athletic Team Pakistan is prepared for WC 2011 to avoid further humiliating World Cups! (Ameen!)
